Today in history: Robert F. Kennedy shot June 5th, 1968

47 years ago, another member of a political dynasty was trying to pave his way to the White House.

On June 4th, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy, a U.S. senator and brother of assassinated president John F. Kennedy, won the California Democratic primary election. Later that night, he celebrated his victory with supporters at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.

At 12:50 a.m. PDT, Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan, a 24-year-old Palestinian, open fired on the candidate, shooting him critically four times. Sirhan was wrestled to the ground and arrested while Kennedy was rushed to the hospital. RFK fought for his life, but died a day later at the age of 42.
